See the world in a different light!

In general, when you live on an island, you are more isolated. You think that your island is the center of the world. But that is not the case. That's what the local media inspire among others. There is a viewing culture on the Antilles and Aruba. Other than the radio, TV is an important media. However, there are hardly any television programs or cinema films that specifically focus on the youth. In order to stimulate their social- and cultural development, KidDocs offers the youth the possibility to create a broader view of world. The festival program is composed of international festival-quality documentaries with peers from around the world as main figures. It is a visual encounter. They are introduced to children and youth from other countries and cultures, with different lives and housings, how they play and what their dreams, thoughts, and problems are. The films appeal to the curiosity of the young public, getting holding up the mirror in a promising matter. They contribute in the awakening process to adulthood. Objective The objective of KidDocs is to begin with:
  • Acquaint the Antillean and Aruban youth with the genre of documentaries;
  • Inform the Antillean and Aruban youth on the world outside the island they live on;
  • Teach the Antillean and Aruban youth to work together and be curious;
  • Give the Antillean and Aruban youth the possibility to use their fantasy and other abilities, by making films of there own;
Organizations and persons involved
Marion Hilhorst, documentary filmmaker and producer of Het Pakhuys Foundation in Amsterdam, is the initiator and driving force behind KidDocs. Het Pakhuys works together with Fundashon MovieMente in Curaçao. The objectives of both foundations are similar. The number of enthusiastic collaborators with KidDocs continued to grow in the past years. A few of them have been with KidDocs since the beginning of the project and are meanwhile indispensable. KidDocs attracts every year more interested collaborators. (read on the KidDocs Team)

Future
KidDocs continues to develop itself. The festival part continues to be for the first year students of secondary schools (brugklassers) as the most important target group. School evaluations show that this works pretty good. The workshop is going to focus on 'older' youth that aspire to a future in the audiovisual world. Possibilities are that other forms of collaboration are out there, for example with schools in the Netherlands or on other islands.
